The free Microsoft TTS engines available
on the Download page work very well, but
they are quite robotic sounding. If you want
a high-quality voice that sounds more natural,
Impulse Technology recommends the following
voices available from NextUp.com.
Important!
These voices are available in both 8khz and 16khz versions.
The 16khz voices sound the best (when played through your
sound card), and are recommended for use
with IDentify! and Phone Plus. They are also recommended
for use with CallStation to announce incoming calls.
However, the 16khz voices CANNOT be used for speaking
through the modem. If you want a better voice
for use with CallStation's TTS greetings, TTS hang-up messages,
or remote access, then you MUST get the 8khz voices. If you
don't use these features very much, then you can just get the
16khz voices to use for announcing incoming calls, and configure
the modem to use one of the Microsoft voices.
Kate and Paul are US English voices
supporting SAPI 5 Speech applications including IDentify!,
Phone Plus, and CallStation. Each voice requires
around 300mb of disk space. Both are available
on CD or via download for only $35 (plus shipping
on the CD).
Listen to NeoSpeech Samples:
The AT&T Natural Voices have also been
tested and work very well, but they take
over twice as much disk space as the NeoSpeech
voices. Mike and Crystal are available from
NextUp.com on CD or via download for only $35
(plus shipping on the CD).
